Those who know me know that I am in my forties. I was working with a wonderful 20-something designer on a web page where she had done the graphics and some css and I was functioning it all together.
My jaw dropped in amazement when this mac-loving designer firmly planted her finger on my screen as she was explaining a needed update. I couldn't even continue the conversation because I was so dumbfounded by what I thought was a totally un-artist type move.
After this happened a few more times, I couldn't stop myself. I told her, with a smile on my face, that I could not believe that she was touching a monitor. Not my monitor, but a monitor.
She understood, she nodded and smiled.
I told her that I worked with a mac addict that had a big sign reading 'HOVER' over the top of his monitor and that he instilled in me the understanding that you don't touch a monitor.
She smiled and said, "I think it's a generation gap."
I've often been the older dude in the office when it comes to website work but this one came out of left field.
"Really," I said, "A generation gap?"
"Yes," she continued, "My generation touches our screens. We touch our phones, we touch our iPads and our tablets, and we touch our monitors."
I realized she was right. I have to stop living in the past.
Tomorrow, I'm touching my monitor.
It'll keep me young.
