Stupid Words

prepopulate

Not in the dictionary!

This one always catches me off guard. I will be in a meeting and someone will say something about how we should prepopulate the database.

You can only populate, you can not prepopulate by inserting data. The act of inserting data is not PREpopulating, it is just populating.

Maybe you can refer to an island before any human was there as a prepopulate time of the island. Either way, it is a stupid word!

Synopsize

No. Can this really be an actual word or is someone yanking my chain, pulling my leg, gritting my teeth?

It is a real word. It is a real sucky word, but a real word.

Please avoid this word. Be cool and say something like "Could you nutshell that for me?" instead of "Could you synopsize that?"

Sends chills down my spine to even say the word in my head.

Webinar

What a stupid word. The idea being that you sit at your computer and attend a seminar through the Internet.

I have never heard anyone whose IT knowledge I admire use this word. It is usually spouted by someone who is trying to be cool.

It should be noted that a "Web Seminar" does exist. They happen often and the technology is pretty good. Surely we can avoid the word though, right?

reiterated

Used only by people that are tense. Usually used in a meeting where someone is trying to say that they told somebody something after having been accused that they had not told the person certain information.

It is just too much word for the buck. It isn't easy to say, it makes you sound like an ass.

Lighten up. Don't use it.

co-mingle

Used by shifty sales people that would say things like 'shifting paradigm' and 'synergy'. There is no such word as co-mingle. There is such a word as commingle but the pronunciation puts the emphasis on the ming not the "co"

Why can't the word just be mingle? What is different between mingling and commingling? I think commingling is a financial term and should be left that way. The rest of us, let's just mingle. Okay?

irregardless

I held off on this one because I think that those wacky dictionary people have now succumbed to the use of this word and are including it in their editions.

regardless = no regard

irregardless = no no regard.

Double negatives are a no-no.
