Neti Pot

What is a Neti Pot?

A Neti Pot most often looks like a little tea pot. In fact, my kids have asked me why I keep a tea pot in the bathroom! If you can imagine a tea pot shape with a handle on one end and a little spout on the other, then you know the shape of a Neti Pot. The only difference is you won't be pouring tea into a cup, you pour water into your nose!

Why use a Neti Pot?

Have you ever taken a hot shower after going swimming? Has your nose felt wet inside and out? That is what a Neti Pot feels like to me! I use a Neti Pot every night to clear my sinuses. I pour water in one nostril, then water and other stuff comes out the other side.

I then switch and pour the water from the Neti Pot through the other nostril. The natural flow of the water irrigates the sinus cavities.

How does a Neti Pot work?

Irrigation! I have heard that the Grand Canyon got that way because there is water flowing in a river at the bottom. I have never been there, so people could just be putting me on, but if it is true, I think it is a great example of the power of irrigation!

I like to use slightly warm water with a little bit of salt added to the water. Some Neti Pots are sold with little packets that have a salt mix to add to the water. I think these work fantastic and are great if you are just starting out with a Neti Pot.

Should I use a Neti Pot?

As with any good web site, I am going to tell you that you should consult your physician before ever doing anything ever at any time. I can only answer the question for me. So let's rephrase it.

Do you use a Neti Pot?

Yes, I do! I use a Neti Pot whether my sinuses are congested or not. I find that the daily ritual of sinus cavity irrigation is almost zen-like! I don't really know what that means, but I know that it feels good to do it. I also know that since I started using the Neti Pot in the evenings before bed, my sinuses have survived in situations where they normally wouldn't.

How do you use a Neti Pot?

If you have read this far, you are seriously considering a Neti Pot! Here are the steps that I take when I use my Neti Pot.

  1. Rinse out the Neti Pot.
  2. Pour a little salt at the bottom of the Neti Pot.
  3. Run some slightly warm water.
  4. Fill the Neti Pot with the slightly warm water.
  5. If your finger is clean, mix the salty water up a bit with your finger.
  6. Otherwise use a spoon, some pots come with one.
  7. Hold the Neti Pot in your right hand.
  8. Tilt your head to the right like you are looking down your shoulder.
  9. Insert the spout of the Neti Pot in your nostril.
  10. Continue to breath through your mouth.
  11. Tilt the Neti Pot up to allow the water to begin flowing.
  12. The Neti Pot should be inserted well enough to create a type of seal.
  13. Allow the water flowing from the left nostril to flow into the sink.
  14. When the Neti Pot is about half full, bring the pot down to stop the flow.
  15. Repeat with the other side.

Do you really use a Neti Pot?

I really do. I am a real guy named David Johnson that has had this website for years. I hope that you find the relief that you seek whether you use a Neti pot or not.

To be specific, I use the SinuCleanse Neti Pot. I have even bought replacement packets. I am very happy with the results.
