Ubuntu 7.04 has been great

About a month ago, or maybe just after the release, I got the distro for Ubuntu 7.04 and installed it over my Debian box at home.

I could not be happier with this operating system. I really want to stand up strong and tall on this one and talk about what a joy it is to run Ubuntu.

I know it sounds cliche, but... everything just works. Many of my favorite programs come pre-installed. Firefox and Gaim are ready and raring to go from install.

I left Firefox open and Poella used the machine to access her email. After about an hour, she told me that 'the printers were missing.' I said, 'Sweety, the whole operating system is missing, and replaced!'

I was kind of concerned that installing a printer would be a pain, but three clicks later I had printed, in color, exactly what she wanted.

The OS is incredibly aware. I have performed three or four updates with ease. When I wanted to view a few movies, the codecs were downloaded and installed with just a few clicks.

It's like this. If your grandma has never used windows, you could give her this as her first machine and she would just email and surf her little heart out. There would be a slight learning curve, otherwise. But Ubuntu 7.04 seriously passes the granny test.

Have you tried it?
