Lorwyn - The Novel
In preparation for the release of the new Magic: The Gathering set, I am reading a book called Lorwyn by Scott McGough and Cory J. Herndon. These two Magic powerhouse authors have written many Magic novels on their own. This is the first time that these two authors have collaborated on a book for the Magic: The Gathering series.
Lorwyn is also the name of the set. The Magic: The Gathering website is featuring preview cards right up until the release. Although the preview cards have been fun to read and discover, it was this article that truly brought the book to life for me.
If you check out that article, scroll down past the concept artists and check out the Lorwyn elves. They are some seriously battle-ready elven folks. Lorwyn is tribal, Mark Rosewater even warned the design team to avoid Onslaught II, and the book details very well the tribal aspects of the game.
If you are new to Magic: The Gathering, hang out with tenth edition. Some of the coolest cards in Magic are in tenth edition. If you are ready for the expert level of Magic play, or even if you skipped out for a while, check out Lorwyn. I believe that Lorwyn will be one of the best sets ever.
Admittedly, I probably think that about every new set. I loved Time Spiral. Kamigawa was great, Mirrodin was fantastic. Although Lorwyn will not be a three-block set, I think it's synergy with part two of the block (two releases out) will make it extra special.
I plan on having the book read by the time I play in the pre-release tournaments. I love doing that because when the packs are busted out it is like having a non-illustrated book explode with illustrations.
And the illustrations are by some of the best fantasy artists available today. (Welcome Home, Matt Cavotta!)
The book is standing well as a work of fiction that adds to the explosive gameplay that is Magic. The boggart attack by the elves is a bit too graphic for me, but the faeries and flamekins, and even the kithkins, weigh out the story with great delight.
Gotta Read!
