Nach-O-Cup Cheese Sauce
Fake Food. It's just disgusting to me how what I eat is so very far away from the food that I want it to be.
Today, I had lunch at Donato's pizza. I had the roasted vegy sub. It was poor at best. There was hardly anything in this sandwich. All bread. Not like Dave's Cosmic Subs Haight-Asbury, which is full of the veggies it claims.
Anyway, I also get the wedge fries that came with a 'cheese sauce'.
The full name of the cheese sauce was Nach-O-Cup Cheese Sauce. As I looked at this cup of stuff, I realized how it was nothing of what I thought it should be. It came unheated, despite the warning on the side that the contents may be hot. Nope. It wasn't heated up. I'm not complaining. I suppose nuking it could have only made the content worse.
This is not cheese. It is a cheese sauce. Emphasis is on the word sauce. I am not dipping my fries in cheese, as I might have thought, no, I am dipping my fries in a sauce. It is a sauce that has the 'flavor' of cheese, but it is not cheese, it is a sauce.
I think it is even more misleading to call it the Nach-O-Cup® cheese sauce because there is nothing 'Nacho' about it, it is just a trademarked name that sounds like Nacho.
In fact, the main ingredients are water, partially hydrogenated (<--bad!) soybean oil, maltodextrin (<-- corn!) and modified food starch. Then it goes on to say it contains less than 2 percent of cheddar cheese. There is more Corn in the cheese sauce than there is cheese!
I believe that corporations, in an effort to make more money, have tried to keep the cost of items low by substituting cheaper, lesser ingredients in items that we think are better than they are. You see, we expect that the food that we are buying is actually the type of food that we have been led to think it is.
This cheese sauce is made by Land O' Lakes (Nach O' Cup?). There is an interesting blurb on their website, "Our Cheese Sauces have the creamy richness and real cheese taste that you would expect from America’s leading dairy specialist."
Note the highlight: Our Cheese Sauces have the creamy richness and real cheese taste that you would expect from America's leading dairy specialist.
Wouldn't it be nice if it had the real cheese that you would expect from America's leading dairy specialist?
But no. We don't get real cheese. We get real cheese taste. And we don't get our real cheese taste from real cheese. We get our real cheese test from our real cheese sauce. It would damn sure be nice to just get the real cheese!
