Merry Christmas - 2007

There are three phases of life...

Tonight, for a group of about 40 Cub Scouts, I played Santa Claus. I have never donned the red suit, black boots and white beard before. I suppose turning 40 qualifies you in some way to dress up like jolly old Saint Nick. It must be harder for the younger ones to pull off the gig.

I did okay. I could have spent a little more time with each kid asking them more about what they want and why. I passed out presents and gave away candy canes. The presents had names on them so I was able to call out names and see eyes light up. I heard younger children saying "It's really him!"

I lost my voice. I ho-ho-ho'd it away. Although, there was one thing I remember not saying. One of the children asked me where Rudolph is and I replied "Well, I left him outside. But don't you worry, if I know Rudolph, he is out there right now dancing with Dancer, prancing with Prancer..."

And I stopped right there. Whew.

But in my head I distinctly remember thinking "And getting blitzed with Blitzen!"

With that, I would like to wish all that celebrate a very Merry Christmas. By that, I mean, hold everyone you love close to your heart this next week. Make sure that they know how you feel. Make sure you share your happiness and watch that sharing make you happier. Give the gift of time. Take pictures. Be emotional.

It's worth it.
