As I Watch The Oscars
These are my picks with their ranks in the Oscar Pool:
Best animated feature film of the year: Ratatouille: Rank: 8
Best documentary feature: Sicko: Rank: 7
Best motion picture of the year: Michael Clayton: Rank: 6
Performance by an actor in a leading role: Clooney, George for Michael Clayton: Rank: 5
Achievement in directing: Coen, Joel and Ethan for No Country for Old Men: Rank: 4
Performance by an actor in a supporting role: Hoffman, Philip Seymour for Charlie Wilson's War: Rank: 3
Performance by an actress in a supporting role: Swinton, Tilda for Michael Clayton: Rank: 2
Performance by an actress in a leading role: Page, Ellen for Juno: Rank: 1
The ranking gives you more points for that one or something. Anyway, I am watching the Oscars now and 'blogging' it.
I was glad that Jon Stewart in his monologue mentioned Barack Obama's middle name Hussein and his last name rhyme. I think if it gets put out there now, it becomes less important later.
My number one rank, Ratatouille, just won animated feature. That is very good for me. I had a feeling that it was a shoe-in. It's a movie about a restaurant critic finding his perfect meal. Obviously, critics like it. I didn't like it. It was too much for me to imagine a talking rat. I just felt out of place when I saw it.
That lady from Junebug, a movie that I wish I owned, just sang her song from Enchanted. I bet that she hates that song. She did a good job and all, but I think I would hate that song if I had to sing it more than once. I know I already would hate it if I had to hear it more than once.
Best Costume, Best Make-Up, Best Set Decoration, Best way to waste an hour! Geez. Come on!
I saw Vantage Point this weekend. Roper didn't like it. I did. It was a great ride and I liked the way they did the rewind thing. Sure, it happened 8 times, but it was a great way to tell the story.
Okay, next up I believe is supporting actor. I saw Charlie Wilson's War and was overwhelmed by Phillip Seymour Hoffman. I picked him because I believe he deserves it for that performance. Great movie. I ranked it three because I didn't think I could count on it. Crap, Hal Holbrook is nominated. Dangit. Could be bad for me...
Shoot. No Country For Old Men Guy won. Okay, good thing I ranked it third. Sorry, Phillip. I really hope to see the NC4OM movie soon. The winner is speaking spanish during his acceptance speech. I don't remember pressing two.
Here comes the second nominated song. Harlem church choir being introduced by a white stick figure... Very powerful song but they blew the ending. The little girl was fantastic and deserved the applause that didn't happen because they ended it weird. Too bad.
Owen Wilson is the coolest actor in Hollywood. I remember some controversy about him freaking out or something. I saw the headlines at the Giant Eagle checkout line. It doesn't matter to me. I love his voice and his nose. His hair looks dumb though. Just a thought.
Bee movie joke after the french guy. Lame. Best Animated Short Film. I wish they would release all the nominees on a single DVD. Can I watch them somewhere online? What the heck? The guy brought the puppet. That whole thing was just weird.
Best Supporting Actress! I went with the Michael Clayton lady. The part at the end where she buckles under the reality of what's happening was almost as good as her getting dressed nervously. I sure hope that it comes through! And the winner is... Score! I saw the flick and she came through. What did I rank it... Scroll up, scroll up... Two? Dang. Well, good. Got the points I guess.
Third song. That's how you know. New words: That's how you know it's from Disney. It sounded like it was from The Little Mermaid. Bleh.
I can't believe I haven't seen the movie No Country For Old Men. How have I not seen this movie?
Best Actress! I picked the Juno girl but had no idea. I haven't seen Juno yet either. Still in theatres, though.
This is my lowest ranked item. Good, because I missed it. I am two and two with 10 out of 14 points. I hope the oscars start flying now. I am tired and want to go to bed. Who is this Best Actress? I don't even know what movie this is supposed to be. What a weird thing. It seems like the whole place was asking the same questions that I am. Who was that?
Oh, man. The next song is from the movie Once. The movie is sitting right here for me to see and I haven't watched it yet. Here comes a song from that movie. I hope it makes me want to see it.
Well, kind of. I saw that big wall of guitars, very expensive beautiful guitars, hanging behind them as they sang and couldn't help but notice the 'authentic' one he was playing. I still want to see the movie.
Why aren't they giving awards out like mad? Isn't this over at 11 o'clock?
Best Movie? Is that next? They just dragged me through 79 years of movies. And now they are doing editing. This is very confusing. Honorary Oscar. Okay, I'm nervous about my bedtime. I feel a lot of commercials coming.
Potty Break.
Enchanted has three of the five nominated songs. I really hope it doesn't win. Okay. So Close. So close to the announcements of the winners.
John Travolta has always reminded me of my older brother. But not until after Grease and the Sweathogs. Here comes the song. No points, no worries.
Well, I really have to watch this movie now. It beat Enchanted which was nominated three times. I like Jon Stewart, but he may have gone to far with the arrogant line. It happens.
Please start finishing this up now. I have almost all my eggs in the Michael Clayton basket.
Jon made it right by bringing out the girl to do her thanks.
Come on, now. Let's go.
Well, I blew my tiebreaker. I called the show to end at 11:23. I thought that would be 23 minutes over. Turns out it is on until 11:30. Dang!
It looks like documentaries are next. I went with Sicko and Michael Moore. It seemed like a safe bet. 7 points on this one. Before the decision I am 10/14. And after the decision?
Dang. Not Sicko. Taxi To The Dark Side. It's about U.S. interrogation. I want to see it. I am now 10/21.
I don't know much about Juno, but it's writer seems very cool.
Five Pointer for Best Actor. I went with Clooney. And the winner is???
Daniel Day-Lewis. Dang! I am now 10/26.
Yes! I got the directors. I put it at 4. That makes me 14/30.
If I get the best picture of Michael Clayton, I finish at 20 out of 36. Hopefully that will happen.
And the best picture is???
No Country For Old Men. Dang! That's a loss for me for sure. Meanwhile, it makes me mad that I haven't seen it yet! I must see it and there will be blood soon.
Thanks for watching the Oscars with me. Let me know if you want to go see a movie.
